Dr. MARK NORBURN
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST
Understanding human emotions and behaviour whilst advocating for meaning and change has always been at the centre of my practice. Witnessing people overcoming adversity provides me with a sense of purpose and fulfilment in my chosen profession.
My Story...
I found myself in a job that had no meaning for me. The more disillusioned I became in the job, the more interested I became in people – relationships, what affects them, society, and how so easily our mental health can deteriorate. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others, to look back on my life and feel that I did some good along the way. I studied part-time whilst still working, first the Psychology Undergraduate degree, then the Masters in Applied Forensic Psychology, and finally the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
I worked across a number of different settings: a High Secure mental health hospital in their assessment unit, CAMHS (with young people who experienced anxiety, depression and engaged in self-harm), Community Adult mental health service and with people who have autism, Intellectual disability and have behaviours of concern, the prison service (with men who commit sexual and/or physical harm). I developed extensive skills in supervising others as well as gaining further experience in using various therapy models (e.g., Acceptance and Commitment therapy, Compassion Focused therapy).
More recently I am the Clinical Psychologist for the Oncology Service in the local hospital, support young people who have been victims of sexual harm, and provide supervision to Allied Healthcare professionals who are faced with significant challenges not least with the Covid pandemic but more recently with Assisted dying.
I take pride and satisfaction in seeing others progress and their quality of life improve, and being a Clinical Psychologist helps me to value my own life and appreciate the ‘here and now’ far more than I ever used to.
